Institution: The Homestead Museum is a six-acre historic site that interprets the diverse history of southern California and the Workman and Temple families from 1830 to 1930 in order to foster an understanding of how history impacts our lives. This beautifully landscaped Museum features the Workman House, an 1870s picturesque country home constructed around an 1840s adobe built by William and Nicolasa Workman; La Casa Nueva, a Spanish Colonial Revival mansion built in the 1920s by the Workmans' grandson Walter P. Temple and his wife Laura; and El Campo Santo, one of the oldest private cemeteries in southern California. Located about twenty miles east of downtown Los Angeles, the Museum offers a variety of educational and entertaining programs, such as guided tours, festivals, lectures, and workshops, to a diverse and multicultural audience.

Job description: The Programs Coordinator is responsible for proposing, developing, coordinating, and promoting programs primarily focused on youth in grades pre K-12. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to: coordinating the development, execution, and evaluation of school based and non-school based programs; coordinating training for classroom and museum teachers; assisting with public programs and off-site presentations; assisting with training, supervising, evaluating, and rewarding volunteer staff; researching and interpreting historical materials; and assisting with exhibition planning. Other duties include serving on and facilitating teams and supervising the site on selected days, including some weekends and holidays. The Programs Coordinator reports directly to the Public Programs Manager, has exempt status, and works full time (40 hours per week).

Qualifications: Requirements include a BA in museum studies, education, history, or equivalent from an accredited institution; experience in successfully executing school based and non-school based programs; excellent writing, speaking, interpersonal, organizational, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills; and computer literacy. Preference will be given to candidates with an MA in the above mentioned fields, or equivalent; two or more years experience in teaching, developing programs and/or curriculum for elementary school-age children; two or more years experience managing projects and/or volunteers; experience in museum interpretation and historical research; experience in working on teams; and Spanish or Chinese fluency. Essential functions for this position include the ability to speak, read, and write English fluently; climb and descend ladders and stairs to a height of 15 feet; lift and carry loads up to 20 pounds; type at least 30 words per minute; and drive an automobile.

Salary: $36,000 annually. Benefits include vacation and sick leave; fully paid medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage; and a retirement plan.
